What Is Mahjong Solitaire?

Flower tiles and season tiles are exceptions to the exact-match rule. Any flower tile can match with any other flower tile, and any season tile can match with any other season tile. This gives you a small amount of flexibility when those tiles are open.

Identifying Open Tiles

Understanding which tiles are open is the most important skill in Mahjong Solitaire. A tile is considered open if at least one of its long sides is free and it is not covered by another tile above it.

Tiles that are completely surrounded on both sides or covered from above cannot be selected. This is why the order in which you remove tiles matters so much.

Winning and Losing

You win a game of Mahjong Solitaire when every tile has been removed from the board. You lose when no more legal moves are available but tiles remain on the board. This situation is sometimes called a "dead end."

Not every layout is guaranteed to be solvable. Because the tiles are shuffled randomly at the start, some deals are inherently easier or harder than others. Skilled players improve their odds by making thoughtful choices rather than relying on speed alone.

Tips for Beginners

If you are just starting out, focus on learning to spot open tiles quickly and plan a few moves ahead. Keep these beginner-friendly tips in mind:

• Remove top tiles first. Clearing tiles from the upper layers opens up more options than removing tiles from the bottom.
• Watch the corners. Corner tiles can only be freed from one direction, so deal with them before they become trapped.
• Don't rush. Mahjong Solitaire is not a timed race unless you want it to be. Take a moment to consider your options.
• Use flowers and seasons early. These tiles can unlock tricky areas because they match freely with each other.
• Save shuffles for emergencies. If your game offers shuffles, keep them in reserve for when you are truly stuck.
